Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium that infects the stomach lining and can lead to gastritis. It is a common cause of both acute and chronic gastritis.

Types of Gastritis

Gastritis generally manifests in two forms:

  • Acute gastritis: Sudden onset.
  • Chronic gastritis: Develops gradually over time.
Other classifications include autoimmune gastritis, drug-induced gastritis, and eosinophilic gastritis, depending on underlying causes or morphological findings.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

  • H. pylori infection: A leading cause of acute and chronic gastritis.
  • NSAID use: Prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) irritates the stomach lining.
  • Alcohol and smoking: Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking increase risk.
  • Stress: Severe emotional or physical stress can trigger acute gastritis ("stress gastritis").
  • Medical conditions: Crohn’s disease, sarcoidosis, or other inflammatory disorders.

Common Symptoms

  • Upper abdominal pain or burning sensation
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bloating and early satiety
  • Loss of appetite and unintended weight loss
  • Indigestion, belching, and gas

How Is Gastritis Treated?

  1. Lifestyle Modifications:
    • Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and NSAIDs.
    • Manage stress and adopt a balanced diet.
  2. Medications:
    • Antacids or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to reduce stomach acid.
    • Antibiotics for H. pylori eradication.
  3. Dietary Adjustments:
    • Avoid spicy, acidic, or caffeine-rich foods.
    • Opt for bland, non-irritating meals.
  4. Medical Follow-Up: Regular check-ups to monitor recovery.
